Lower Garden District
Welcome to the Lower Garden District
Neighborhood
The Lower Garden District is my favorite neighborhood in New Orleans. It’s convenient to most of the most popular neighborhoods in New Orleans: 15 minutes to Uptown, 5 minutes to the C.B.D., and 10 minutes to the French Quarter. Recently, the Lower Garden District has undergone a tremendous amount of redevelopment. People who live here feel a sense of community. You will find astonishing mansions around Coliseum Park with beautiful Greek columns and three breathtaking churches that are each over two hundred years old. During the Great Depression, many families in the Lower Garden District lost everything. FDR created the St. Thomas Public Housing Development for these families in the Irish Channel. Over the next several decades, the area deteriorated but is now being redeveloped. Homes are much less expensive than the Garden District and Uptown. You can find one story shotgun homes as well old mansions converted into separate condos. You will find many bars, salons, boutiques, coffee shops, and restaurants in the Lower Garden District, especially along Magazine and St. Charles streets. During Mardi Gras, dozens of parades run through the Lower Garden District on St. Charles Avenue, a few blocks from your front porch.
What to Expect
The Lower Garden District’s central location will allow easy access to The French Quarter and Uptown, and all parts of New Orleans. It’s much more affordable than the CBD, Garden District, and Uptown. Expect interesting and eclectic neighbors and a fantastic mixture of small and large homes, condos, and apartments. Walkability to every type of restaurant you can think of on Magazine Street and St. Charles.
