Garden District
Welcome to The Garden District
Neighborhood
The Garden District is one of New Orleans most charming neighborhoods. The Garden District we live in today was once part of a few large plantations. As more people moved to New Orleans in the 1800’s to participate in the cotton industry, the plantation owners sold their land and it was developed into other smaller homes, outdoor parks, businesses, and streets. The homes in the Garden District were primarily constructed in one of four different architectural styles: Greek Revival, Gothic, Italianate, and Victorian. Many of these homes were built in the 1800’s. The Garden District has beautiful interior design shops, high-end clothing boutiques and incredible restaurants. One of the most famous restaurants in the Garden District is Commander’s Palace, which is over 120 years old.
What to Expect
You will find beautiful historic mansions along Prytania, Chestnut Street, Camp Street, and St. Charles Avenue. A few notable homes include The Brevard House, where Ann Rice lived, and the Joseph Carroll House, where Mark Twain partied (GONOLA.COM). Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 is located at the corner of Prytania and Washington Avenue. The Lafayette Cemetery was opened in 1833 and approximately 7,000 people are buried in the tombs (freetoursbyfoot.com). You can take a guided walking tour or you can explore the cemetery by yourself between 7am-3pm on weekdays and 8am-4pm Wednesdays (freetoursbyfoot.com).
